Walmart Makers Studio was a multi-seasonal marketing effort put together by the design
team at Giant Spoon. Makers Studio was part of DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion project) for Walmart and the goal of these experiences over the Summer of 2023 was to design unique experiences that amplify the Black community through creative resources and collaborative opportunities. This was the first edition, bringing Walmart to the shore of Virginia Beach for Pharrell Williams Something In the Water music festival
Something in the Water is a three-day music festival, the brainchild of rapper, song writer and producer Pharrell Williams. In addition to his musical accolades, Williams is also a Virginia Beach native who wanted to bring something exciting to his city. We designed this footprint to embody the relaxed yet dynamic audience that the festival attracts, a space for the black community, especially around Virginia Beach to connect, relax and enjoy.
Nothing beats the heat like a custom bucket hats, featuring DIY stick-on patches and pins with phrases to inspire your mind while cooling off your head.
A collective community activity to make new acquaintances while feeling empowered!
Walmart is proud to have a great collective of black-owned beauty brands from skincare to makeup.  Collaborating with a beauty influencer, the DIY beauty guide allowed attendees to try new simple eye looks with the help of professional makeup artists. This glow-up bar gave attendees the opportunity to try, experiment with, and take these products formulated specially for this beauty community.
Beach and rest go hand-in-hand, and so a chill lounge powered by snacks was just about the best thing to design and provide to attendees. This lounge became the space to relax, top up sunscreen, and watch the waves while enjoying the music throughout the festival weekend.
As the temperature dropped, our footprint turned into a neon haven, apt for a festival on the beach that no one would forget!
